Warrior of Zen

People keep showing me things I want to buy. Why people, why?

Suzuki Shosan is among the most dramatic personalities in the history of Zen. A samurai who served under the Shogun Tokugawa leyasu in the 17th century, he became a Zen monk at age 41 and evolved a highly original teaching style imbued with the warrior spirit. The warrior’s life, Shosan believed, was particularly suited to Zen study because it demanded vitality, courage and “death energy”, the readiness to confront death at any moment. Emphasizing dynamic activity over quiet contemplation, Shosan urged students to realize enlightenment in the midst of their daily tasks, whether tilling fields, selling wares, or confronting an enemy in the heat of battle. Long popular in Japan but little known to the West, Shosan is presented here to Western readers in a sparkling translation and with a comprehensive introduction that brings alive his unique and colorful teaching.

American Gods

Even the gods go to war. Especially when the Old Gods feel they’re being shown the door by the upstart New Gods. But the story isn’t that simple. A man named Shadow has been recruited by Mr. Wednesday to help rally the Old Gods for the unavoidable battle.

Shadow has his own problems though. He’s just been released from jail. Has no real place to call home. And is being followed around the country by his dead wife.

Gaiman puts all of the myths and legend of old together in this Sandmanesque tale. He even creates several new gods to the mix. You won’t ever look at I Love Lucy the same way again.

Neal Stephenson speaks

Via Cory Doctrow at BoingBoing:

On May 1 at 4:30 Eastern Daylight Time, Neal Stephenson will deliver a live lecture at CMU in Pittsburgh that will be simultaneously webcast. Stephenson’s notoriously shy about appearing at conventions or giving speeches — I’ve only heard him speak once, when he picked up the Hugo award for Diamond Age — so this is a rare treat.

Yet another future investment…

The Forever War

I believe i may have to make another investment soon.

If everything I’ve heard about the power of Joe Haldeman’s, The Forever War is true. I can’t miss out on reading that book.

Part experiment, part an attempt to reach a vaster audience, this book collects a selection of the fiction, nonfiction, and interviews published during the first year of the Fantastic Metropolis website.
