It's Really about Being Excellent to One Another

bteathreemippose.jpgA friend brought up the idea that at least Tim Hardaway was being honest about what he felt when he went on his anti-gay tirade. A point I can see. You definitely know where you stand with that guy. Which ain’t near a basketball court anytime soon.

*zing*

My friend also brought up an idea he read via a columnist: “if everyone were as honest as Hardaway that the world would be better off.” He wasn’t feeling the truth in that statement and he tempted me to discuss. And here that is, slightly edited for internet consumption:

I’ve often thought that, off and on. Cause, my god, it’d be nice sometimes to know the people who don’t like me because of my smooth, chocolatey goodness. A lot of those types hide it behind false friendliness. Who knows what they get out of that.

Unfortunately, not everybody will be grown-up enough or thick skinned
enough to deal with that kind of honesty.

Then there’s the honesty that isn’t really honest but merely masked aggression and a tool for general superior-ness.

If people just learned how to be fucking civil to each other and not think the other guy has it better, or is out to get them, or whatever generates those little devils of hate in the first place–well that’d be a grand step forward, indeed.

But no, I think the world personality is too multi-faceted for Hardaway’s brand of “truth.”* He could have merely said he was homophobic, or just uncomfortable with the idea, and that would have left all the PTBs in a bind. Because they couldn’t do anything if he had left it at that. Least I don’t think they could. At best he would be labeled ignorant and shuffled into rehab like GREY’S ANATOMY’s Isaiah Washington. Now he’s ignorant and out of a job. I’m not sure which is worse.

But he had to disturb everybody’s shit and prove that he was so not gay by rambling on with the rest of his noise.

I heard this phrase a while back, “homophobia is the new gay.”

That made me chuckle cause everybody knows that’s true anyway.

*Have you seen George Takei’s PSA response to Hardawy’s noise? If not, you should.
