“Nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public.”
—H.L. Mencken
I’ve heard the quote once or twice in passing. It was ponzu that set my sights on who wrote it.

It is now quite lawful for a Catholic woman to avoid pregnancy by a resort to mathematics, though she is still forbidden to resort to physics or chemistry.
–H. L. MenckenLove is the triumph of imagination over intelligence.
–H. L. MenckenEvery decent man is ashamed of the government he lives under.
–H. L. MenckenA celebrity is one who is known to many persons he is glad he doesn’t know.
–H. L. MenckenA cynic is a man who, when he smells flowers, looks around for a coffin.
